Mr. Herman is a grain merchant and owned a fine elevator. He is also an extensive grower of flowers and vegetables and markets the same all over this section of the state. Sailed for France May 29, 1918. Fought in all actions of the 30th Div. Returned to the USA April 11, 1919. Landed at Charleston, S. C., April 15, 1919. Enlisted in Troop A, N.C. Cavalry, in Lincolnton, N.C.

Richard Louis “Dick” Herman, 61, of Baker City, died peacefully on May 22, 2005, at his home with his family at his side. His funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Jon Privett of the First Nazarene Church will officiate. He will be buried at Mount Hope Cemetery next to his daughter, Dr. Suzanne Farebrother. Genealogy of Peter Spracklin

Apparently the name Spracklin had other forms: Spartling, Sprackling. In English or Welsh it meant “the one with the crooked legs.” As far as known to the writer, some early Spracklins on English records were of the Canterbury Catholic Church, Canterbury, County Kent, England. The church records there show a Robert, baptized 1645, son of Spratling; Adam, baptized 1653, son of Robert Spratling. Heraldic arms were granted in 1619 to Leonardus Sprackling, Rob’tus Sprackling, and Adam Sprackling, of Thanet, Co. Kent.
