By participation, this record does not limit this to soldiers, but also contains the records of those men and women who served the Red Cross, Y.M.C.A., and other non-fighting positions. Soon after World War 1 localities across the country wished to honor the men and women who had served the Nation from their locality. St. Charles County, Missouri, is one of these counties. L.A. Heckman, born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1857, relocated to this city in 1877. Initially employed by D.H. Talbot in the Land Title office, he transitioned to running a grocery and confectionery business on 4th Street in 1879.
David Heckman, a prominent figure in Liberty’s development, arrived in the area in 1870 and became a key business leader after settling permanently in 1877. Born in Pennsylvania in 1847, he came from a family with deep roots in agriculture and civic service. Establishing a successful mercantile business with his father-in-law, Heckman became known for his integrity and commitment to the community. He was involved in various public endeavors and was a member of several fraternal organizations. He married Emma Barnett in 1874, and they had one child.
