Funeral Services for Mrs. Widell are Saturday
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 17, at 2 o’clock at the Elgin Church of the Nazarene for Mrs. John Widell of Elgin who died suddenly Thursday morning at the age of 55. Mrs. Widell had been in poor health for a number of years and Wednesday of this week became suddenly worse. She was taken immediately to a La Grande hospital where she died.
Born Ethel Violet Croghan, March 12, 1901 at Big Horn, Wyo., she came to the Elgin country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Croghan, when she was six months old. They made part of the trip in a covered wagon. As a young lady she received her schooling at the Gordon Creek school, and the early-day Thorny Grove school, now torn down. She was married to John Widell on November 1, 1921. Mr. Widell has been a carrier driver at the Mt. Emily Lumber Co., and an employee of the former companies there for nearly 25 years.
Survivors include her husband John; one daughter, Nova Jean Hallgarth; and one son, Bud Widell; both of Elgin. There are five grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Hazel Croghan of Elgin, and Jessie Wisdom of Portland; three brothers, John and Charles Croghan of Elgin; and Wallace Croghan of La Grande; and several nieces and nephews.
