Long-time valley resident passes

William Dudley Miller, lifetime resident of the Grande Ronde Valley, passed away late Friday night at a local hospital. He was 93 years old.

He was born March 5, 1876, in La Grande, the oldest of nine children of George and Matilda (Conley) Miller. His parents were immigrants to Union County in 1874 and later resided in the Cove area.

Mr. Miller attended schools in Union County. When he was 22 he and his brother-in-law, John Smith, started farming by renting 800 acres from his father. This was located nine miles northwest of Cove.

He married Alice M. Mires on July 19, 1899. She preceded him in death on February 16, 1933.

He married Lillian Mixon on November 16, 1937 in Los Angeles, California.

Mr. Miller retired from active farming in 1944, leasing his farm and moving to La Grande. He has resided in La Grande since that time.

He was also preceded in death by 2 children, 2 brothers and 1 sister. He is survived by his wife Lillian Miller, La Grande; four sons, Ward, Union; Glenn, Baker, Arthur, Anaconda, Montana; and Howard, Burney, Calif.; three daughters, Edna Stedman, Santa Monica, Calif., Adeline Horne, Santa Monica, and Alice South, Venice, Calif.; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; two brothers, John Miller, La Grande, and Benn Miller, Arcadia, Calif., three sisters, Mary Gray, San Carlos, Calif., Joisa Clark, Beaverton, and Georganna Chadwick, Cove; one step-daughter, Anna Seward, Leggette, Calif., two step-sons, John Sparks, Hartshorne, Okla., and Joe Sparks, La Grande.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel, Rev. Paul Jewell of the First Methodist Church will officiate. Concluding services will be at Summerville Cemetery.
