Mayes, David Mark – Obituary

David Mark Mayes, 43, of La Grande died July 18, 2008, at his home.

His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Valley in La Grande.

David was born on Sept. 1, 1964, at Sacramento, Calif., to Donald and Jo Elaine Mayes. His family moved from Northern California to Haines when he was 9.

David was a fourth-generation descendent of early Oregon pioneers. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1980. He was a 1982 Baker High School graduate. David attended Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, graduating in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree (chemistry and physics).

He accepted a full scholarship to the University of Washington at Seattle, where he graduated in 1990 with a doctorate in chemistry. He returned to Oregon, settling in La Grande where he and Dave Koza became partners in DSquared Development. He married Anna Cavinato in September 1993.

David was an avid gardener, a superb chef, remarkable woodworker, furniture maker, and internationally known as an authority on Volkswagens. He was a member of the Rotary International in La Grande. He was a DJ for KEOL radio where he indulged his lifelong love for all kinds of music.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Cavinato; a son, Mark Warren Mayes; and stepdaughters, Christina Emma Wickman and Laura Elizabeth Wickman, all of La Grande; his mother, Jo Elaine, and stepfather, Don Berry, of Haines; father, Donald and stepmother, Angel Mayes, of New Mexico; brother, Warren, and his wife, Linda Mayes, of Great Falls, Mont.; and grandmother, Martha Scott, of Riverside, Calif.; uncles and aunts, Larry, and his wife, Yasuko, of Okinawa, Japan, Diane and her husband, Doug Barnes of Moses Lake, Wash., Barbara and her husband, Bob Foree, of Baker City; cousins, Ricky Scott, Laura and her husband, John Diaz, of Colton, Calif., Chris and his wife, Elizabeth Barnes, and their son of Sparks, Nev.; nephew, Chad Mayes, of the U.S. Marine Corps; stepsister, Christine, and her husband, Rick Williams, of Fort Mohave, Ariz.; many friends; and his beloved cat, Puff.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the David Mayes Memorial Scholarship Fund at Eastern Oregon University.

Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is handling arrangements.
