1st Class Private, Co. M, 81st Div., 324th Regt. Born in Richmond County; son of W. R. and L. C. Smith. Husband of Emeline Gibson Smith. Entered the service Nov. 20, 1917, at Rockingham, N.C. Sent to Camp Jackson, transferred to Camp Sevier, from there sent to Camp Mills. Sent overseas to France Aug. 18, 1918. Fought at Vosges Mtn. Sector defensive and at Meuse-Argonne. Returned to USA June 18th and mustered out June 25, 1919, at Camp Jackson, S. C.
