Sam Hayes, 73, former long-time resident of the Kittitas Valley, died last night October 30, 1949 at a Yakima hospital. Hayes had been a farmer in the Kittitas Valley for the greater part of his life until he retired and moved to Yakima about 10 years ago. A native of Colorado, Hayes came to the Kittitas Valley 65 years ago with his father, the late Sanford Hayes, a pioneer of this area. Hayes is survived by a sister, Mrs. W. S. Ray A. Huss, 78, of Parker, a farmer and 50-year resident of the Yakima Valley died Sunday [March 29] in Central Memorial Hospital, Toppenish. Mr. Huss was born at Ellensburg and came to the Valley from there. He had belonged to several Valley granges and was a past master of the Riverside Pomona Grange. He had retired from farming in 1957, and most recently had resided here. Edward N. Whitson, judge of the United States Circuit Court of the Eastern District of Washington, died at his home in this city Saturday night, following an attack of paralysis last Wednesday morning. Mrs. Grace Y. Toy, 1917 Court St., Baker, died Tuesday evening in St. Elizabeth Community Hospital. She was 72. Mrs. Toy was born April 8, 1896 at Sherwood, Ore., the daughter of Lee and June Ho Lee.
