Hough Family of New Bedford, Massachusetts

The progenitor in New England of those bearing the family name of Hough was William Hough, son of Edward Hough, of Westchester, in Cheshire, England. This William Hough was known as a house carpenter at Gloucester, Mass., along just prior to the middle of the seventeenth century. He lived at Trynall Cove, where and on Biskie island, opposite, he had land. It is not known that his father came to New England, but it is believed by those who have written of the family that Ann Hough, who died at Gloucester in 1672, aged eighty-five years, was Edward’s widow and the mother of William Hough. The latter was selectman in 1649 and 1650. His departure from Gloucester is spoken of in the latter year, when he joined the migration to New London, Conn., and in that State the family is a numerous one. William Hough married Oct. 28, 1645, Sarah, daughter of Hugh Calkins, and of their ten children the first three were born at Gloucester and the others at New London.

Dr. William B. Clapper was born in Bristol, New York, December 13, 1864. His mother was of English descent and his father German. He attended the public schools and Starkey Seminary, and after a year in Syracuse University, entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Baltimore, Maryland, from which he was graduated, April 19, 1894. (IV) Richard, son of Mark Cline, was born at Victor, New York, September 18, 1829. His education was received in the public schools of his native town. He has been a farmer all his active life, and still makes his home in his native town. His farm contains about a hundred acres. Biographical Sketch of John A. Lauder

(II) John A., son of James Lauder, was born in Florida, Montgomery county, New York, August 21, 1821, died December 3, 1883. He was a farmer all his active life. He came to Victor, Ontario county. about 1855, and located on a farm which his son now (1910) owns. He married, in September, 1855, Ann Bowerman, of Schenectady, New York, and they had one son, John W., mentioned elsewhere. The mother was born in 1815 in Montgomery county and died in 1901.

Biographical Sketch of John Cline

(II) John Cline, son of Martus Cline or Kline, was born in 1764 or 1769, died in 1829. He had a grant from George the Third, according to one account, of a square mile of land on the north side of the Mohawk river. He removed to Victor, Ontario county, in 1814. Among his children was Mark, mentioned elsewhere.

Biography of Arthur Gilbert Aldridge

(III) Arthur Gilbert, son of Gilbert T. Aldridge, was born November 24, 1861. He received his early education in the public schools of Victor and Lima, New York. During his boyhood he worked on his father’s farm, and at the age of nineteen took charge of the homestead. (VII) Brice W., son of Silas G. Bowerman, was born in Farmington, New York, in 1837. He attended the district schools there and Macedon Center Academy. He finally settled in Victor, New York, and followed farming. He had an excellent farm of one hundred and eight acres. In politics he was a Republican; in religion a member of the Society of Friends. Theodore, son of John Conover, was born in Victor, November 22, 1858. He was educated in the district schools of his native town and at Canandaigua Academy and Rochester Business College.
