Gabriel W. Cox was born on July 13, 1852, in Gallatin, Missouri, to Samuel P. and Mary Cox. He received his education locally and at Christian University and Gem City Commercial College. His early career included positions as a clerk and a business partner in grocery and grain with William M. Flint. He later worked as a traveling salesman, then engaged in railroad construction in Colorado. In 1874, he married N. S. Stone, and they had three children, with two surviving. Mrs. Cox was actively involved in the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
Col. Horack L. Moore, born February 25, 1837, in Ohio, served with distinction during the Civil War and in campaigns against Native Americans in the West. Initially a lawyer-in-training, he enlisted in the Second Kansas Infantry, rising to lieutenant colonel of the Fourth Arkansas Cavalry. After the war, he engaged in business and served as treasurer of Douglas County. A Democrat elected to Congress in 1892, he later became president of the Lawrence National Bank and actively participated in historical societies. Moore remained a prominent local leader in Lawrence until his later years.
William Henry Whitney, born June 21, 1860, in Monticello, Minnesota, was the son of Cephas Newhall and Cyrena Patch Whitney. He completed a classical education at Knox College in 1884. Whitney married Emma Gmin in Trinidad, Colorado, in 1890, and they had four children. He served as manager of The Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company and held leadership roles in the Congregational Club and The Cleveland Congregational Brotherhood. Whitney was also a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
