TIMOTHY GILMAN POWERS, son of Timothy, and grandson of Dea. Stephen Powers, is an intelligent farmer and man of influence, residing at the East Village. Married Eliza Winter, daughter of Adolphus Winter. He has been Selectman several times, and held many other offices.
William Cant Sturoc, “the bard of Sunapee ,” as he is often called, was born November 4, 1822, in a humble, straw-thatched cottage in Arbroath, Scotland, son of Francis Sturoc and his wife, Ann (Cant) Sturoc. Doubtless, the poetic genius has descended to him from his paternal great-grandfather, James Sturoc, who wrote a book of “Hymns and Spiritual Songs,” and died in Panbride in 1750. WILLARD C. KEMPTON, son of Col. Calvin Kempton, was born Oct. 13, 1840. He labored on the farm at home until 1858. He then attended school at Newport and Kimball Union Academies until 1861, when he commenced the study of medicine with his uncle, Dr. W. Clough, of Pittsfield, Mass. He attended lectures at Berkshire and Hanover Medical Colleges. LEANDER HOLBROOK, Son of Peter, and grandson of David Holbrook, was born April 11, 1815. The family came from Upton, Mass. His father, a merchant at the East Village, died in 1822. Owing to a want of proper management in the settlement of his estate, the son was left penniless. William Gregg Andrews, a prosperous farmer of Sutton, Merrimack County, N.H., was born July 7, 1834, on the farm upon which he now lives. His father was Nathan Andrews, Jr., a native of Sutton; and his paternal grandfather was Nathan Andrews, Sr., born in Danvers, Mass., in 1767, a son of Samuel Andrews. AMASA H. DUNBAR, son of Sylvester and Hannah Powers Dunbar, born in 1807, early in life removed to Moravia, N. Edward S. Barrett, a prosperous farmer of West Concord, was born February 17, 1824, at Ashburnham, Mass., the son of Benjamin and Nancy (Stone) Barrett. The paternal grandfather, also named Benjamin, who was a native of Ashby, Mass., followed the occupation of farmer, spent the latter part of his life in New York State, and ended his days in Aurelius, N.Y. His two daughters, JULIA and MARY, are both well educated and accomplished teachers.
DENNIS POWERS, son of David Powers, was born May 24, 1808; graduated from Amherst College, Mass., in 1835, and from Theological Seminary at Andover, Mass., in 1838. He was ordained and settled over the Congregational church and society of East Randolph, Mass., December 5, 1838. At his own request he was dismissed from this church and people April 15, 1841. Bridgeman Hapgood, the father of Mrs. Mary E. Dickenson, was born in 1800, son of a well-to-do farmer, who built the first frame house in Reading, Vt. He became a successful merchant in Reading, at the same time manufacturing starch in Plymouth and woollen goods at Weathersfield, Vt. At one time he was extensively engaged in farming on the old homestead. He was a Democrat in politics. WILLIAM P. WHEELER, A.M., born July 31, 1812; graduated at Harvard; was for many years a prominent member of the Cheshire County bar; was twice appointed to a seat upon the bench of the Supreme Court, which he declined; 11 was twice a candidate for Congress; was president of the Keene Savings-Bank, and was a trustee of the New Hampshire Industrial School and of the Agricultural College; died May 10, 1876.
Benjamin F. Porter, a member of the Board of Selectmen of Plainfield, was born in this town, August 28, 1852, son of Jabez and Eliza F. (Green) Porter. The Rev. Micah Porter, the father of Jabez, was a Congregational minister, who, after preaching in Connecticut, his native State, for some years, was called to Plainfield, where he passed the rest of his life. He was also a cancer doctor. The maiden name of his wife was Elizabeth Gallup, and his children were: Isaac, Benjamin, William, John, Jabez, Martha, and Phœbe. Henry Tubbs, a successful dentist practising in Newport, was born in Peterboro, N.H., February 24, 1831, son of Joseph and Azuba (Monroe) Tubbs. The family is traced back to one William Tubbs, who came to the Plymouth Colony from London, England, in 1635. The paternal grandfather of Dr. Tubbs was Captain Joseph Tubbs, of Marlow, N.H., an early settler, a successful farmer, a good citizen, and a Captain in the old State militia. ELIAS POWERS, son of Major Abijah Powers, is a man of intelligence, a respected farmer, a lover of fun and story-telling, an adept at angling, trapping and bunting. He has served the town twice as selectman and has been county commissioner three years.
DR. REUBEN CARROLL, a native of Sutton, Mass., came to Croydon in 1792, and settled near the Four Corners. He was the first physician in town, and for more than forty years was a successful practitioner. In 1840, he was thrown from his carriage and killed. (See Oration of Dr. Stow.)
