Nathaniel Tolles, M.D., was for many years one of the most prominent physicians and surgeons of Claremont. A native of Weathersfield, Vt., he was born September 17, 1805, son of John Tolles. His father, an industrious farmer, moved from Weathersfield to Claremont about the year 1819. His grandfather, Henry Tolles, was a member of Captain William Upham’s company during the Revolutionary War. Hubbard Alonzo Barton, of Newport, a member of the present firm of editors and publishers of the New Hampshire Argus and Spectator, was born in Croydon, N.H., May 12, 1842, son of Caleb L. and Bethiah (Tuck) Barton. The Bartons are descended from English emigrants who came to the country previous to 1640. They have embraced many who have become distinguished in the learned professions and in other vocations in life. DR. EZRA GUSTIN, son of Ezra Gustin, studied medicine with Dr. Elias Frost, of Plainfield, and after three years of most successful practice in his native town, died November 29, 1818, aged 30 years. As a teacher he was much beloved. As a man he was possessed of superior judgment, self-reliant, energetic, and much a favorite. He married Anna Holdbrook, daughter of David, who survived him but one yearleft one child, the late Mrs. Lewis Richardson, who died in 1858.
