Sanpoil Indians

The Sanpoil Indians, part of the Salishan linguistic stock, resided near the Sanpoil River and Nespelem Creek, and were later relocated to reservations. They were known by various names, including Hai-ai-nlma and Ipoilq. Their villages, such as Haimisahun and Nspilem, housed distinct groups within the Sanpoil. Population estimates varied significantly from 800 in 1780 to around 1,300 post-1850, with census counts in the early 1900s reporting approximately 324 Sanpoil. The Sanpoil River and Nespelem River commemorate their legacy.
