NELSON ROGERS. – Born on a farm in Vermont in 1841, and early apprenticed to the trade of chair-making, Mr. Rogers determined to come to this coast, and arriving in California in 1858, there engaging in placer mining, and farming for the space of eight years. The discontinuance of his residence below was immediately succeeded by a removal to the Granite creek district, in Eastern Oregon, where he followed mining until 1873, when he located at Burke’s Hollow and farmed until 1882. John C. “Jake” Hefner, 69, of Union, died Sept. 12 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Private burial will follow at Union Cemetery. Jake was born on Dec. 23, 1937, the son of Howard and Wilma (Starnes) Hefner in Hickory, N.C. The family moved to Oregon when he was 12. William “Bill” Ellenberger, 82, Pendleton died Saturday [January 12] at Delamarter Care Center. Funeral will be 10 a.m., Tuesday at Folsom-Bishop Funeral Chapel with interment in Olney Cemetery, Pendleton. Ellenberger was a life-time resident of Umatilla County. He was born Oct. 1, 1897 in Pilot Rock. He was married to the former Grace Spencer who died in 1967. Ellenberger farmed in the Pilot Rock area for many years, then owned the Trailer Park in Pilot Rock. Hascall, Charles Daniel – Obituary

Charles Hascall of Pilot Rock died last night at home. He was 84 years of age and was born in 1837 near Syracuse, New York. At the age of three he moved with his parents to Vermont and remained there until 50 years of age after which he came to Pilot Rock. He is survived by four sons, Fred, Arthur, James, and Maurice Hascall, all of Pilot Rock, as well as 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
