Daniel Messer, born in 1829 in New Hampshire, began his career overseeing workmen on railroads, including the Boston, Concord, and Montreal lines. He moved West in 1853, taking on significant roles on various rail projects, eventually serving as Roadmaster. After managing the Messer House in Charleston, he shifted to a planing mill before leasing the Essex House in Mattoon in 1869. Known for his success as a landlord and his solid financial standing, he currently serves as a Director at the First National Bank.
