W.L. Prillaman, section foreman at Union Junction was killed by an O.W.R.& N. helping engine late last week. The engine was backing down the track as Prillaman climbed through the cars on a siding and stepped on the track before it. Death was practically instantaneous. Prillaman is survived by the widow and several children. He was a member of the La Grande lodge of Elks and was an old resident of this district. North Powder News Saturday August 28, 1919

Hodgkins Inhaled Blast Fumes In Well Following a half hour’s illness caused by being overcome by poisonous gas in a well at his home in Government Gulch on the Telocaset road, Nathan B. Hodgkins died shortly before noon Wednesday. Mr. Hodgkins had drilled a hole and placed a charge of dynamite in the bottom of the well, which is about thirty feet in dept. Haines, Oregon Darlene Newell, 68, of Haines, a former Halfway resident, died March 13, 2004, at her home. Her memorial service will be scheduled later in Idaho. Darlene was born on June 15, 1935, at Harper, Idaho, to Ben H. and Sara Goff Young. In the winter of 1953, Darlene married Buck Newell in Nevada. Mary Margaret Black Sheehy, 83, a former Baker County resident, died May 13, 2001, at the Wallowa County Memorial Hospital in Enterprise after a long and courageous fight against cancer.
