Enterprise, Oregon Mrs. James E. Adkins died at Portland March 4 and funeral services were held in that city Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Adkins lived in Enterprise several years and went from here to Portland. Sally G. Arney died in Portland Feb. 13, 1981. The daughter of Lelah and the late Dr. A. J. Hockett, she was born in Madison, Wisconsin, Nov. 26, 1935. She is survived by her husband Douglas Arney, her mother Lelah Hockett of Portland; sons John Beaudoin of California, Steve Beaudoin of Portland and Wade C. (Corky) Johnson of Bend. St. Helen’s Hall opened September 6th, 1869, in the building then known as St. Stephen’s Chapel, standing at the southwest corner of Fourth and Madison streets. There were fifty pupils on the opening day. By November 1, the number had increased to eighty and the principals, finding that they had more than they could do, called Miss Atkinson, now Mrs. F. M. Bernice F. Zimmerman Cheren, 87, of Portland, died Nov. 22, 2001, in Portland. There will be a celebration of her life at 11 a.m. Saturday at her home. Mrs. Cheren was born on Nov. 13, 1914, at Portland. She graduated from Clinton Kelly High School of Commerce in Cleveland in May 1933 as a bookkeeper and stenographer. Word has been received of the death of Mary Hazel Smith Lyon. She was born in Linwood, Nebraska, March 23, 1889, the daughter of George and Kathryn Smith. The family moved to eastern Oregon in the early 1890’s, settling in La Grande. They later moved to Elgin in 1898. Her father was bookkeeper for the Goodnough Mercantile Store in Elgin until his retirement. Hazel was in the first graduating class from Elgin High School in 1910. Morrison street, into which enters the bridge-way from across the Willamette, begins with the Esmond Hotel of five stories, on the north, and W. S. Ladd’s five story brick, on the south. Portland, Oregon Winifred Allen Hammack died March 30, 2003, at age 95. Winifred Haynes was born May 2, 1907, in Rupert, Idaho. She moved to Portland in about 1930 and was a homemaker. In 1929, she married Donald M. Allen; he died in 1968. She married Lyle Hammack in 1976; he died in 1996. Survivors include her daughters, Sunny A. Smith, Sally A. Harris and Denice A.
