Minam, Oregon High School Youth Dies at Elgin Sidney Gene Wilson, 17-year-old Elgin high school junior, passed away August 1. He was the son of Fonzy Wilson of Minam and a brother of Esley Wilson of Elgin, with whom he made his home; two sisters, Bethel Crogan and Jessie Wilson McDowell of Elgin; a brother, Richard of Elgin, and a half-brother Willard Young stationed in Japan. Minam, Wallowa County, Oregon Small Girl Drowns In River at Minam While picking flowers with playmates near the Wallowa river at Minam last Saturday, May 8, Betty Childers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Childers lost her balance and fell down the steep bank into the stream. Union Barber Loses Life In Minam River H. D. Tallman, 40, a barber of Union, was drowned in the Minam River, near Minam while fishing in that stream Sunday. There was no one near enough to Tallman to tell what caused him to fall into the river. Whether a misstep caused his precipitation into the water or whether his death was due to a heart attack is not known. Kills Self When Twins Arrive Nelson Crowl, 45, a truck gardner, six miles east of Minam, in Wallowa county, shot and killed himself when he received word that his wife was the mother of twins born in the La Grande hospital. The body was found at the Crowl home last Saturday five days after the act. It was Monday-five days earlier-that Crowl was notified form the hospital in La Grande that his 26-year old wife had presented him with twins. Lauretta Cross, of Milton-Freewater and a former resident of Wallowa County, died July 9, 2007, at Walla Walla General Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash. She was 85. Mrs. Cross was born June 19,1922, in La Grande to James Everett and Etta Rebecca Berg Rachau. The family resided on Pumpkin Ridge, outside of Elgin. They later moved to Minam, where Mrs. Cross attended school through the second grade. Enterprise, Oregon Elmer R. Collins, of Republic, Wash., died on June 16, 2007, in Renton, Wash. He was 75. Mr. Collins was born in Minam to Lloyd and Irene Collins on Dec. 20, 1931. He attended schools in Enterprise and Milton Freewater. He joined the Army in 1949 and was honorably discharged in 1952 as a staff sergeant.
