Maryville College is located near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. Founded in 1819, it is the 12th oldest institution of higher learning in the South and maintains an affiliation with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Known for its academic rigor and its focus on the liberal arts, Maryville College was the first college in Tennessee to enroll minority students and also the first college in Tennessee to award a bachelor’s degree to a woman, in 1875. Biography of Dr. J. S. Gardiner

Dr. J. S. Gardiner, Postmaster at Anaheim, was born in Maryville, Tennessee, in 1841. His ancestors were from Scotland formerly. He received his literary education at the common schools of his native county. In 1861 he entered the University of Pennsylvania, and continued there during one term. Then the war coming on in 1862, he entered the Confederate army. He enlisted April 13, 1862, in Company I, Thirty-seventh Tennessee State Volunteer Infantry, and served until September 4, 1864, when he was discharged on account of disability.
