Biographical Sketch of E. B. Baird

He was born in Onondaga County, New York, November 6, 1837, and was raised on a farm. In 1872, he came to Iowa and bought land in Maple Township, Ida County, Iowa. Mr. Baird was married at age of 30 to Harriet Conover, daughter of Isaac Talmage, in Scholarie County, New York. Their child was Edmund C. Baird. Mr. Baird married Matilda Preston in 1877. She was the daughter of John Preston, who was born and educated in Scotland. They had three children: Andrew E., Preston, and Mabel Laura. E. C. Biographical Sketch of H.B. Pierce

H.B. Pierce, deputy recorder, is a native of Ill.; moved with parents to Cedar County, Ia., in 1865. He moved to Carroll county in 1874, and engaged in school teaching; came to Ida Grove in 1878, where he was principal of the schools for three years. In 1881 was appointed deputy recorder.

Arthur L. Moore, of the firm of G.A. Edmunds & Co., dealers in general merchandise, is a native of Va.; came west in 1870, and in 1875 located at Sioux City, and was employed in the wholesale department of the dry goods house of Tootle, Livingston & Co., for six years. He then established present business. They carry a stock of goods that would be a credit to a much larger city; also has a branch house at Correctionville, Iowa.

Biographical Sketch of Ed H. Barnes

Ed. H. Barnes, stock dealer, was born in St. Albans, N.Y.; moved to Manchester, Ia., in 1855; was their engaged in business for twelve years. He went to Waterloo, where he engaged in the hotel business; then went to Yankton, Dakota He built the telegraph line from there to Fort Sully. In 1871 he came to Ida County, Ia., and was elected sheriff in 1872.

Dunn, known as Ale, a farmer and stock-raiser of section 23, Logan township, Ida County, was born in Scott County, Iowa, in 1854, a son of A.R. and Margaret (Grace) Dunn, natives of Ohio and New York, respectively. William Smith was owner and proprietor of the Central Roller Mills, Ida Grove, Ia. He succeeded Wilkinson & Smith in the milling business, this firm having succeeded Brown & Ream. Mr. Brown was the founder of the milling plant and erected the a two-story structure building in 1883. It was a buhrstone mill having a capacity of 40 barrels. In 1887 it was changed to a roller mill by Wilkinson & Smith and its capacity increased to 60 barrels per day. He was County Commissioner of Ida County, Iowa, was born in Schuylkill Co., Pa., in 1845. He was the youngest child of Thomas and Margaret (Watters) Williams, natives of Cornwall, England. Richard was reared and educated in Jo Daviess Co., Illinois. In October 1864, he enlisted in Battery F, First Illinois Light Artillery, for one year, or during the war. He served principally with Battery I. He took part in the battles of Nashville, followed Hood to Eastport, Ms., where he was on garrison duty. He was honorably discharged at Chicago in August, 1865. Philo O. VanWagner passed away on August 4, 1919 at Ida Grove, Iowa. His affliction was pronounced muscular paralysis. Philo was born on November 17, 1849 at Oxford, Michigan, and was in his 70th year. He attended school at the Oxford Academy. At the age of twelve, he moved with his parents to the country.
