Luana Marie Dillman-Van Vleck, 77, died Aug. 24, 2004, at Holy Rosary Hospital in Ontario, where she had been hospitalized the past few days for flu-like symptoms. Luana will be remembered in the Baker City and Halfway areas as Luana Dillman, and the mother of Walt Dillman Jr., Sammy (Nancy Dillman) Mercer, Lonnie Dillman and Dock Dillman. Elsie Lee Butler (1929-2008), a former Halfway, Oregon, resident, died on June 2, 2008, at her home in Yuma, Arizona. Born on July 19, 1929, in Venita, Oklahoma, to Vernie and Iva Bloyed, she was raised in Gustine, California. Elsie married Bob Scoggin and had three children. In 1971, she married Walt Butler, blending their families to raise seven children. Elsie worked as a nurse and moved to Halfway in 1976, where she actively volunteered in the community. She was survived by her children, stepchildren, siblings, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Horse Stumbles Rider Is Killed Rex Bowerman, of Halfway, was killed when thrown from his horse on the hill trail between Halfway and Richland Sunday sometime after 10 o’clock. Mr. Bowerman after visiting his sister, Mrs. Donald Sullivan in Richland left for home about 10 o’clock. It is believed the rider’s foot caught in the stirrup when his horse stumbled and was dragged approximately half a mile. The body was found by James Chandler and Del Taylor.
