Free Massachusetts Vital Records
This is a collection of free vital records books for Massachusetts towns, most of them known as “Tan Books.” Generally, these records go up to 1850 at which, the genealogist can use the census records to assist in identifying the family connections further. They’re called “tan books” because they were bound by tan cloth. Included with this article is an account of why and how these manuscripts were published along with links to all 274 Massachusetts vital record books which can be freely read.
The Proprietors of Norwich Vermont
The early proprietors of Norwich, Vermont, largely hailed from Connecticut towns such as Mansfield and Tolland, with some from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. While many grantees did not settle personally, they transferred their rights to their sons or younger acquaintances. Key early settlers included Captain Hezekiah Johnson and Jacob Fenton. The proprietors diligently organized land surveys, established roadways, and incentivized settlement through financial support, ultimately fostering rapid growth in the new township. Meetings continued until 1770, addressing land divisions and mill constructions.
Lovewell’s War – Indian Wars
Lovewell’s War, fought between 1722 and 1725, involved New England colonists led by Captain John Lovewell against Native Americans incited by French Jesuits. Tensions escalated despite efforts at negotiation, culminating in violent clashes, including attacks on Fort George and the town of Brunswick. Lovewell’s expeditions saw initial successes but ultimately led to his death and the defeat of his forces at Pigwacket. The war highlighted the brutal nature of frontier conflicts and the devastating consequences for both colonists and Native Americans.
