J. D. McPhail
Corpl. J. D. McPhail, born on September 8, 1899, in Cumberland County, joined the military on July 10, 1916. Initially stationed at Camp Glenn, he was later transferred to Camp Sevier before sailing to France on May 11, 1918. McPhail served with the 119th Infantry, participating in key battles including Ypres and the Hindenburg Line, where he was killed in action on September 29, 1918. He also served nine months on the U.S.-Mexico border and purchased a $50 Liberty Bond.
