Enterprise, Oregon Herbert Stanley “Bud” Briggs, 90, died at his home in Enterprise on May 31, 2005. He was born in New Meadows, Idaho, on Jan. 16, 1915, to Roy and Maude Briggs. Mr. Briggs came to Wallowa County in 1939. He worked at the mill in Joseph and later as a janitor for Joseph High School. In 1940, he married Lucile “Peal.” They were married 63 years when she died in 2003. In 1950, Mr. Briggs went to work for Pacific Power. McEwen, Melvin E. – Obituary

Melvin E., 62, 412 S. Pacific Ave., Kelso, died April 2 at home. He was born April 5, 1907 in Winchester, Wash. He had lived in this area for 42 years and worked as a bartender. He was a World War II veteran and was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include one son, Shirley McEwen; three brothers, Wilbur of Kelso, Elmer of Oakland, and Dan of Centralia; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Timberman of Vancouver, and Mrs. Alta Rasmussen of Battle Ground; several nieces and nephews. Skilloot Tribe

Skilloot Indians. A Chinookan tribe found by Lewis and Clark in 1806 residing on both sides of Columbia river in Washington and Oregon, above and below the entrance of Cowlitz river, and numbering in all 2,500 souls. The Hullooetell may have been a band of them . They were among the tribes almost exterminated by the fever epidemic of 1823. Later their principal village was Cooniac, at Oak Point, Washington. In 1850 Lane placed their number at 200, but as a tribe they disappeared from view a few years later. The Seamysty appear to have been a division.

Many people attended the last rites for Farrell Hess at Union, Monday, where the body of the young man was taken for burial. Services were held at the L.D.S. church, and the building could not accommodate the crowd that wished to pay its last respects to the young an. All members of the Hess family were present at the funeral ceremonies. Holten, Erma Eileen Champ Kotoskey – Obituary

Erma Eileen Holten, a longtime Longview resident, died March 17, 1992 at a local nursing home. She was 83. Mrs. Holten was born Jan. 31, 1909 in Winlock to John and Agnes (Eells) Champ. She had lived in the local area since 1935, coming here from Seattle. She was a homemaker and had worked at the Weyerhaeuser planer mill from 1935-1937. Mrs. Holten is survived by her husband, Gunner Holten, at home in Longview; a son, John McGregor of Vancouver; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and five nieces.
