Saconnet Tribe
The Saconnet Indians were a small tribe located near Sakonnet Point in Rhode Island, associated with the Wampanoag and Narragansett tribes. Under Chief Ashawonks, they allied with the English during King Philip’s War in 1675, leading to the sale of their land. Their population was around 400 in 1700, but an epidemic in 1763 drastically reduced their numbers. By 1803, only about a dozen Saconnet remained near Compton, with their chief village sharing the tribe’s name.
