Biography of John B. Adams
John B. Adams, a prominent figure in Independence, Kansas, manages the Security Abstract Company, the largest abstract firm in Montgomery County. His family lineage traces back to notable historical figures, including statesman Charles Francis Adams. Born in 1855, John B. experienced a varied career, with roles spanning from printer to postmaster before co-founding the abstract company. He is active in local politics, the Congregational Church, and Masonic organizations. Adams was married twice, with descendants continuing to contribute to the community.
Biography of Alexander D. McKinlay
Alexander D. McKinlay, born on February 20, 1853, in Iowa, was a notable figure in the American West, exemplifying bravery through his military service in the Nez Perces and Bannack Indian wars. After moving to Idaho in 1877, he became a successful farmer and business owner in Wallace. McKinlay held various public offices, including justice of the peace and city council member. He was politically active as a Republican and later a Populist, and he contributed significantly to his community’s development. McKinlay’s legacy is marked by his courageous deeds and public spirit.
Biographical Sketch of N. S. Stewart
N. S. Stewart, born on February 27, 1853, in Battle Creek, Michigan, moved to various locations including Clayton County, Iowa, and Jackson County, Minnesota, before settling in Jewell County, Kansas, in 1872. After five years of clerking in the implement business, he founded a successful hardware firm, Faidley Bros. Stewart, in 1882. Stewart married Emma C. Gist in 1880, and they have one child, Willie. His diligent work as a clerk laid the foundation for his thriving enterprise in Burr Oak.
Schmitz, John – Obituary
John Schmitz, a prominent local banker and Baker City’s oldest banking figure, passed away at 96 after a lengthy career spanning fifty-four years. Born in Iowa, he moved to Pendleton in 1887 and Baker in 1889. He co-founded the Baker Loan and Trust Company and served as president of First National Bank after several mergers. Schmitz was involved in civic affairs and was a member of the Elks Lodge. He is survived by several nieces, a nephew, and a step-daughter. Funeral services will be held Friday.
