Choteau County, established between 1870 and 1888, spans 27,380 square miles east of the Rocky Mountains, serving primarily as a grazing region with notable agricultural valleys. By 1884, its livestock was valued at $2 million, while Fort Benton, the county seat, became a critical trade hub on the Missouri River. During this period, 9,500 tons of freight were transported, including valuable furs. Stewarted by companies and various steamboats, the river navigation efforts were vital before the advent of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The county’s population reached 3,058, with significant settlements emerging throughout.
