Bertha Alice “Babs” Brainard, 91, a longtime resident of Prairie City, passed away at John Day, on Sunday, November 16, 2003. Babs was born May 29, 1912 in Canby, Oregon to Noah Mac and Suzanna Crawford, and was raised in the Madras area. She married Ben Brainard in Fossil, Oregon on July 18, 1929, and with her husband lived most of the time in Grant County. She was quite active in the outdoors with her husband, and in about 1970 became the Justice of the Peace at Prairie City. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. for Ray O. Hindman, 79, a longtime resident of Baker who died in his home Wednesday. Hindman, a native of Eagle Valley, graduated from Baler High School. He was a lifetime resident of Baker County and had resided in Baker since 1919. Hindman was a retired merchant.
