FREMONT–Merle P. Hoffman, 84 of Fremont, died Sunday, April 23, 1989 at the Mahaska Manor in Oskaloosa. She was born Dec. 9, 1904 near Fremont, the daughter of Asa G. and Carrie Lawson Phillippe.
She graduated from the Fremont High School in 1923 and attended Normal Training College at Cedar Falls. She also attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa. She taught in rural schools in Mahaska County and at the Fremont Community School. She was a member of the Justa-mere Club, the Fremont United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women. She was married July 5, 1929 in Oskaloosa to Ward J. Hoffman.
She is survived by her husband, one son, Willis of Bloomfield, three grandchildren; and three sisters, Faye Simmons of Oskaloosa, Marie Linsley and Vesta Linsley, both of Hedrick. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Fremont Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Township Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Fremont Rescue Unit or the Fremont United Methodist Church. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
