County Pioneer, Called Beyond
Jabez J. Conley, Union County pioneer, died at his residence in La Grande at 2 o’clock this morning. His health had been failing for several months.
Funeral services will be held at the Snodgrass & Zimmerman mortuary at 2:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be at the Island City cemetery in the family burial plot. The Rev. Oliver Riley, rector of the St. Peter’s Episcopal church, will preach the funeral sermon.
Mr. Conley was born on the Fourth of July, 1861 in Jefferson county, Illinois. He crossed the plains with his father’s family in 1874. He was the oldest son of A. B. Conley and Joisa Conley, deceased, and had made his home in Union county for the last 54 years. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides a great number of friends, his wife, Alma Conley, a daughter of the late Benjamin Brown, who built the first house in La Grande in 1861.
Mr. Conley also leaves five children: Archie B., Luther Nip, Mrs. Myrtle Heryford, Mrs. Irene Carter and Mrs. Effie Goodnough, all of whom live in this county. Another son, Joseph E., died in infancy.
