Jesse Stallings Willis, son of Rev. Cary C. Willis, was born May 8, 1835, in Muscogee County, Georgia. He was married to Amanda D. Horne, daughter of Rev. Jesse R. Horne of Houston .County, Georgia, on May 25, 1859. On March 1, 1862, he enlisted in Company C, Forty-fifth Infantry, and was seriously wounded June 27, 1862, in the Seven Days Fight Around Richmond. Dr. Nathaniel Polhill Jelks, fourth son of James Oliver Jelks and Mary Polhill, was born July 18, 1845, in Hawkinsville, Pulaski County, Georgia, where he died March 28, 1911. When six years old his family moved to Oglethorpe, Georgia, after two years moving to Hamilton County, Florida, where he received his early education, later studying in Augusta, Georgia. In 1863 he entered the Confederate Army, enlisting in Company I, Second Florida Cavalry, under General Jones, a gallant command guarding the interior of the State. Bernhardt (Barney) Mannheim, son of Jacob and Rachel Mannheim, was born near Berlin, Germany, July 10, 1844, and died in Hawkinsville, August 31, 1914. He came to the United States July 9, 1860, and soon enlisted in the United States Army, serving four years of the War Between the States. He was captured during battle and held a prisoner at Andersonville, Georgia, and while there met and admired the people of this section so much that he decided to locate in Georgia later on in life. Judge Henry Hodges Whitfield was born April 11, 1826, and died January 28, 1886. The Whitfields from whom the subject of this sketch is descended came originally from Lancashire, England. William Whitfield, in the early part of the eighteenth century, settled in Nansewood County, Virginia, and in 1713 married Elizabeth Goodman of Yates County, North Carolina.
