The Waverly (Kansas) Gazette of August 22 contains this announcement of the death of A.W. Nichols, a former respected citizen of Union. A.W. Nichols died Saturday afternoon, August 16, 1913, from appendicitis. He had been operated on for appendicitis a few days previously for the removal of the diseased appendix, but when the incision was made it was found the appendix had ruptured and the puss had entered the abdominal cavity, where it caused peritonitis, which was the immediate cause of his death. At his residence three miles North of Union, April 7, Hiram Nelson, aged 67 years. Deceased was born in the town of Rupert, Bennington county, Vermont and has been a resident of Union county for twelve years past. He leaves five children to mourn his loss. Calvin E. Nelson, a former resident of Union, died at Mineral City, Idaho, last Monday evening after a short illness. He was employed at the smelting works at Mineral City and his death is attributed to the inhalation of poisonous gases while at work. The body was brought to Union yesterday morning and the funeral took place this morning at 11 o’clock, Rev. S.M. Driver, of the Methodist church, officiating. Died in La Grande Wednesday morning, December 10, 1924, Mrs. Elmer Neilson, age 43 years. Mrs. Neilson was formerly Miss Fannie Logsdon of Union and High Valley. She attended school in Union. After her marriage she moved to La Grande. Eight weeks ago she underwent a severe kidney operation at the Grande Ronde Hospital. Funeral services for Edward O. Neill, who died at St. Anthony’s hospital in Pendleton Sunday, were held Tuesday with Interment in the Heppner, Masonic cemetery. Mr. Neill was born February 19, 1881 at Hartville, Mo., and came west as a young man. For many years he operated a sheep ranch in the Butter Creek section and at the time of his death he was a guard at the Hermiston ordnance depot.
