Passing of John Taylor With the burial of John Taylor upon the old home ranch at Bristol last Saturday afternoon, there passed over the Great Divide another Kittitas county’s honored pioneers. He was born in Wise county, West Va., in 1851 and died at his home at Bristol station December 12, 1917, of cancer. When but a small boy he removed with his parents to Dassel, Minn., and in 1868 was married to Elizabeth Hutchins who still survives him. Frank Taylor, Sr., 60, Ellensburg native son and widely-known former Kittitas County peace officer, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Santa Ana, Cal., this morning [October 12, 1943]. The son of the late William and Mary Taylor, valley pioneers, he was born in Ellensburg July 4, 1883. He grew up here and graduated from Ellensburg High School. A well-known resident of Ellensburg for more than 60 years, she died Sunday, December 24 [1967], at the Kittitas Valley Memorial Hospital. Vernise A. Swearingen, 43, former Ellensburg resident, died Friday in a Tacoma Hospital from injuries received earlier last week in an accident at the Seattle-Tacoma shipyards where he was employed as a rigger. Plant officials reported that he was crushed while unloading steel plates when he slacked off on a safety line too soon and the plates tipped over on him. A veteran of World War I, Swearingen had enlisted for service in this war WWII, but was discharged because of a physical disability. Ira Stillwell Dies In General Hospital Ira Stillwell died Thursday afternoon at 12:30 at the Ellensburg hospital, following an illness of several week’s duration. In an attempt to save his life a blood transfusion was made Tuesday but he failed to rally. Mr. Stillwell was born may 17, 1887 in Bowen, Illinois, and came to Ellensburg in January, 1903. He became an employe of the Northern Pacific railroad, April 23, 1908 and worked as a wiper until August 3, 1908, when he was promoted to fireman. Stickney, by a little more than a month, Mrs. May Stickney, 70- year-old Kittitas County pioneer, passed away at her home here last night [July 5, 1934] following a lingering illness. Mrs. Sorensen moved to Seattle a year ago from Ellensburg, where she had resided since 1890. She was married to Swan Sorenson in 1895. He preceded her in death a year ago. Mrs. Willie F. [Smith] Collins Smathers, 31, died Thursday [January 3, 1952] in Seattle at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Charles L. Miles.
