Joanne F. Strickler, 79, of La Grande, died Oct. 14 of natural causes. A memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 25 at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. A luncheon will follow at the Presbyterian Friendship Center. Joanne was born to Guy and Esther Furst in Topeka, Kan., on Nov. 24, 1928. Evelyn Mae Bowman of 515 SE Byers Ave. died at St. Anthony Hospital Wednesday [June 6, 1973], one day after the death of her husband, former Pendleton Mayor Hugh Bowman. Mrs. Bowman was 73. She was born April 30, 1900, at Longmont, Colo. She had lived in Pendleton 50 years. Survivors are a niece, Mrs. Chet Kirkman, San Francisco; a grandniece, Mrs. Mark Eckenrode, Los Angeles; and several other nieces and grandnieces and nephews in California. Dad went to visit his Father in Heaven on October 8, 2007 after a brief illness. James was born in Weldona, Colorado on March 26, 1928 to James “Lee” and Gladys “Bernice” Phelps. Sam Hayes, 73, former long-time resident of the Kittitas Valley, died last night October 30, 1949 at a Yakima hospital.
