Wallowa County, Oregon

Wallowa County rancher, Clara Hearing, died Jan.4, 1990, at Elzora Manor in Milton-Freewater where she had resided since Oct. 9, 1987.

She was born Jan. 31, 1909, at Spokane, Wash., the daughter of John and Dorothy (Briscoe) White. The family moved to Wallowa County when she was five years old.

On July 11, 1933, she married Fred Hearing in Pasco, Wash. He preceded her in death in 1962.

They operated a ranch on Powwatka for 25 years. Later they bought the Butte Creek holdings (the old Bill Zurcher Place) from Mark Sevier.

After her husband’s death, Mrs. Hearing continued to ranch for several years then rented the ranch and moved to Union County to work on a cattle ranch for five years. She later moved to Clarkston, Wash., where she operated a flower shop until she suffered a stroke in January of 1974.

Mrs. Hearing was honored with a lifetime membership from the Wallowa County Stockgrowers Association and the Wallowa County Cowbelles. She was the grand marshal of the 1984 Hells Canyon Mule Days celebration.

She is survived by a daughter, Lennie Rice, of Hutchison, Kansas; sister, Juliet Moore, San Pedro, Calif., three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one niece, Gayle Cavalli, Walla Walla, Wash.

Funeral services were held Jan. 9, at Bollman Funeral Home with Dan Trautman officiating. Music was provided by Fred Bornstedt. Private internment was in the Wallowa Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Wallowa County Stockgrowers Scholership Fund or charity of one’s choice, in care of Bollman Funeral Home, in Enterprise.
