An alert and enterprising citizen of Nowata is H. B. Lowery, who since May, 1921, has been active in the office of chief of police. He was born eight miles east of Fort Gibson, in what is now Cherokee county, Oklahoma, on the 9th of July, 1875, a son of Henry and Polly (Parris) Lowery. The paternal grandparents removed to Indian Territory at an early day and Henry Lowery was born in this section of the country, as was his wife, her parents having come to the territory from Georgia.
In the acquirement of an education H. B. Lowery attended the schools near Fort Gibson and putting his textbooks aside, at the age of fifteen years, became a cowboy, following that line of work for twenty years.
Being of Cherokee extraction, Mr. Lowery had an allotment of eighty acres near Caney, Kansas, and he engaged in farming there until 1912. In 1906 oil was developed on his land and there are four producing wells on it at this time. He now rents his farm and draws royalties from the oil.
In 1912 Mr. Lowery was appointed deputy sheriff of Nowata county and at the termination of four years in that office, entered the federal service as Indian special officer to look after the illicit liquor traffic. He was active in that capacity for two years and was then appointed United States deputy marshal under B. A. Enloe. On the 1st of May, 1921, he was appointed chief of police of Nowata and he has proved most efficient in the discharge of the duties devolving upon him in that capacity. He has succeeded in cleaning up the town to a large extent and has put a stop to the liquor traffic.
In 1904 occurred the marriage of Mr. Lowery to Miss Carrie Abbott, a daughter of John and Ellen (Walker) Abbott, the latter being of Cherokee extraction. Mr. and Mrs. Abbott are natives of this state. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Lowery six children have been born: Johanna, who is residing at home; John, twenty years of age, who is living at Wann; Eugene, seventeen years of age; Henry; Huntas and Mayes, all of whom are attending school.
Fraternally Mr. Lowery is identified with the Odd Fellows and he takes a prominent part in the affairs of that organization. He is one of the representative citizens of Nowata and by reason of his faithful discharge of all matters of trust and high standards of citizenship, he has won the esteem of the community.
