Eufaula Tribe
The Eufaula tribe has historical roots as an independent entity, with conflicting accounts of their origins, possibly linked to the Kealedji or Hilibi. Their name may derive from a Cherokee term, and evidence suggests they settled near Talladega, Alabama, before the Yamasee War in 1715. By the 18th century, the Eufaula moved to the Tallapoosa River region. Notable settlements included Upper Eufaula and Lower Eufaula, the latter becoming known for its unruly residents. The tribe’s presence continued to be recognized in census records into the early 19th century.
