African Slaves and Indian Wars
The early civilization of Louisiana was shaped by the interaction of three races: African slaves, indigenous peoples, and Europeans. The Mississippi Company’s agricultural model relied heavily on slave labor, with the black population soon matching that of whites. The Jesuit fathers established plantations in the region, while tensions with local Native American tribes, particularly the Natchez, escalated into violence. Following brutal massacres and retaliatory campaigns, the French faced ongoing unrest and military challenges, ultimately leading to Bienville’s decline in influence and governance.
