Cushman Family of Norwich Vermont

The Cushman family, tracing its origins to Robert Cushman in 1621, played a significant role in early New England history. Solomon Cushman, a sixth-generation descendant, moved to Norwich, Vermont, in 1768. A renowned marksman and Revolutionary War veteran, he later settled in Tunbridge, where he died in 1799. Another Solomon Cushman arrived in Norwich shortly after, bringing his family. Joseph Cushman, Solomon’s brother, also settled in Norwich and served in the Revolutionary War before passing away at age eighty-nine in 1848.

Massacre at Howard’s Well and Other Depredations – Indian Wars

In April 1872, a supply train near Howard’s Well, headed for Fort Stockton, was brutally attacked by a coalition of Indians, half-breeds, and Mexicans, resulting in the deaths or injuries of seventeen individuals. Colonel Merritt reported the massacre, which included horrifying acts of violence such as burning victims and mutilation. Following the attack, cavalry units pursued the attackers, resulting in a skirmish in which Lieutenant Vincent was mortally wounded. The incident exemplified the severe and brutal nature of conflicts on the frontier during the Indian Wars.

Judge Joseph K. Vincent, a prominent figure in Idaho for over thirty-seven years, has significantly contributed to the state’s business, political, and social life. A self-made man, he successfully engaged in mining and stock raising and served as probate judge of Idaho County. James Douglas Vincent, 73, of Ukiah, passed away on April 7 in Gresham. Born on October 17, 1934, in St. Louis, he relocated with his family to Tillamook, where he was raised. Doug had a varied career in logging and truck services, moving to Alaska before returning to Ukiah in 1984 with his wife, Patsy. They ran a service for hunters, and Doug was an avid dog breeder and nature enthusiast. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, a son, and several grandchildren.

Arthur S. Vincent, born on December 20, 1862, in Phelps, New York, is the son of Charles B. and Maria Vincent. Educated in local public schools, he initially worked as a portrait artist before transitioning to fruit cultivation, managing around two thousand trees. Vincent served three terms on the village board of trustees and is active in the Presbyterian church and the Republican party. He is also secretary of the Phelps Business Mens Club and a charter member of the local volunteer fire company. He married Mattie A. Baker and has three children.
