Joshua Cates was an influential and energetic businessman in Christian County, remembered for his eccentricities and originality. Cates was a horse dealer and slave trader, and despite a serious injury from a slave, he continued his ventures with his characteristic vigor. Donald K. Paul, 81, passed away at his home in La Grande, Oregon, on April 14, 2008. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. After retiring, he became a beloved science teacher at La Grande Middle School. An avid sailor and musician, he enjoyed an active retirement with his wife, Lanetta. He is survived by five sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Memorial services are scheduled at United Methodist Church in La Grande.

Marlene Gail Nice Pursley, 57, originally from La Grande, Oregon, passed away on April 13 due to natural causes. Born on September 20, 1950, she was a 1968 graduate of La Grande High School and married Roger Pursley in 1971, later residing in Boggstown, Indiana. Marlene is survived by her parents, husband, daughter, son, five grandchildren, siblings, and extended family. Services will occur in Indiana, with arrangements managed by Loveland Funeral Chapel.
