Soon after World War 1 localities across the country wished to honor the men and women who had served the Nation from their locality. St. Charles County, Missouri, is one of these counties. This manuscript isn’t limited to just the men who fought overseas, it also includes the women who had participated via Red Cross and the men who had actively served in the various campaigns backing the War here at home.

John S. Lemmon, born in Fountain County, Indiana, grew up in Parke County before moving to Council Bluffs in 1854. He later worked at his father’s steam saw-mill in Fontanelle, Nebraska. Lemmon enlisted in the Fifth Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War, enduring imprisonment from August 1864 until April 1865. After the war, he settled in Oakland Precinct, improving a farm and starting a business in 1879. He has served as a member of the Village Board, School Director, Assessor, and Justice of the Peace.
