This small booklet contains all the known men and women who participated in World War 1 and claimed their home of record as Stephenson County, Illinois. By participation, this record does not limit this to soldiers, but also contains the records of those men and women who served the Red Cross, Y.M.C.A., and other non-fighting positions. This book is free to read or download.
The series contains original affidavits of registration that record personal information about each registrant, their photograph affixed to the majority of documents, and the registrants fingerprints. All of these are specific to Kansas, and most have the actual documents attached.
Ray A. Huss, 78, a longtime farmer and resident of the Yakima Valley, passed away on March 29 at Central Memorial Hospital in Toppenish. Originally from Ellensburg, he had been active in local granges and served as past master of the Riverside Pomona Grange. After retiring from farming in 1957, he lived in Parker. He is survived by his wife, Ethel, two daughters, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, while his son Ray Jr. preceded him in death.
Ed Huss, a farmer from Fairview, was tragically killed on May 4, 1917, due to the accidental discharge of his rifle while shooting magpies. The rifle became entangled in a clothesline, resulting in a fatal injury to his forehead. His funeral, held at the Christian church and organized by the Odd Fellows Lodge, was attended by family and friends. Huss leaves behind a wife, four children, and several siblings. He was a longstanding member of the community and had lived on his farm for twenty years.
Mrs. Rose Huss, a prominent pioneer of Kittitas Valley, passed away at the age of 73 on March 12, 1946. Born Rose Rader on October 9, 1872, she journeyed to the area via covered wagon in 1879. A devoted member of the First Christian Church, she was married to Edward H. Huss, who died in 1917. She is survived by two daughters, a son, and six grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending, and she will be interred at IOOF Cemetery.
Harvey Huss, aged 80, passed away on January 27, 1920, at his home in the Fairview District. A resident of Kittitas Valley since 1885, he was born in Ohio in 1840 and married Dorcas Jane Graham in 1863. He migrated west by ox team in 1865, settling in Grant County, Oregon, before establishing his ranch near Ellensburg. He is survived by his wife and nine children. Huss will be laid to rest in the IOOF Cemetery.
Mrs. Dorcas Jane Graham Huss, aged 77, passed away on February 11, 1925, at her son’s residence due to bronchial pneumonia. Born to William Graham and Catharine Pruitt, she wed Elisha Harvey Huss in Missouri on April 3, 1863. Funeral arrangements are pending, and she will be laid to rest in the IOOF Cemetery.
William Sylvester Huss, an 84-year-old pioneer of Ellensburg, passed away on January 10, 1949. Born in Missouri, he journeyed to Oregon by ox cart in 1865 and later settled in Kittitas Valley in 1885. Huss worked for 25 years at Central Washington College before retiring due to health issues. He was married twice, first to Annette Thompson and later to Rachael Allen, who survives him. He is survived by his son, two daughters, a sister, five brothers, two grandchildren, and numerous relatives.
Mrs. Annette Thompson Huss passed away on October 30, 1923, at her home after a year-long illness. She was born in 1877 in Coveys Cove and married William Sylvester Huss in 1899, moving to Ellensburg shortly after. They had three children: Paul W. Huss, Ruth Ballard, and Marjorie Huss. Mrs. Huss was a cherished community member and active in the Royal Neighbors. She is survived by her husband, children, siblings, and father. Funeral services will be officiated by Rev. A. M. Williams.
