Soon after World War 1 localities across the country wished to honor the men and women who had served the Nation from their locality. St. Charles County, Missouri, is one of these counties. This manuscript isn’t limited to just the men who fought overseas, it also includes the women who had participated via Red Cross and the men who had actively served in the various campaigns backing the War here at home.
The aim of this history was to present in a permanent form the key incidents in the history of Minneapolis, from its earliest settlement to its publication in 1895. The primary facts and events recounted were mostly obtained from living witnesses and participants. It was rare for a city with more than two hundred thousand inhabitants to have so many of its first settlers still alive. The city’s growth had been so extraordinary and unprecedented that many of its earliest settlers remained. Some information was also gleaned from the notes left by now-deceased writers who witnessed the events described. Great care was taken to verify the accuracy of all facts and incidents mentioned. While it might have been too much to hope that the work was entirely free from errors, it was confidently believed that any such errors were few and insignificant.
The series contains original affidavits of registration that record personal information about each registrant, their photograph affixed to the majority of documents, and the registrants fingerprints. All of these are specific to Kansas, and most have the actual documents attached.
Henry J. Herzog was born on March 5, 1848, in Bavaria, Germany, and his family immigrated to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1849. After assisting his father on their farm in Mount Pleasant Township, he eventually became a successful farmer and community leader. Married in 1873, he had four children and contributed to local governance, serving on the County board and as treasurer. Herzog was also active in the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He remains a respected figure in his community, emphasizing progressiveness and dedication to agriculture.
Henry B. Herzog passed away on March 9, 1941, at St. Joseph Hospital in La Grande, after battling cancer. Born on September 26, 1870, in Minnesota, he moved west at 18, eventually settling in Wallowa County in 1915. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Helm in 1909 and had a dairy farm in eastern Washington before relocating. He is survived by his wife and seven children. His funeral was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, officiated by Father R.E. Kennedy.
