Private, U. S. Marine Corps, 19th Co., 2nd Div., 6th Reg. Son of W. H. and Nellie Batting of Wilson County. Entered service June 18, 1917, at Norfolk, Va. Sent to Quantico, Va., June, 1917. Sailed for France, Brest, December, 1917. Fought at Chateau Thierry, Meuse-Argonne, St. Mihiel, Verdun and Belleau Woods, where he was wounded June 15, 1918. Shrapnel wound, second wound machine gun bullet. Gassed slightly. Sent to Base Hospital No. 15 and to Base No. 30. Decorations, Croix de Guerre, Franzer Green Cord, French.
