Baker City, Oregon Donna Kowing Backlund, 61, of Baker City, died Sept. 27, 2002, at John Day. Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Shiela Kowing, who live up Laycock Creek in the John Day area. Mrs. Ellen Yates Dead At Boise Ellen V. Yates, resident of Baker for the passed four years, died at the home of her son, William Riggs, in Boise Tuesday morning. Mrs. Yates went to Boise to visit her son about six weeks ago. Mrs. Yates was born in Illinois, October 17, 1840. She crossed the plains in 1854 and located in Washougal, Washington. Gerald Weston “Sam” Sampson, 72, of Baker City, died of kidney disease on June 8, 2006, at his home. Burial will be at Husum, Wash. Sam was born on Dec. 5, 1933, to Claude and Rachel Rowland Sampson at White Salmon, Wash. He was a 1951 graduate of Washougal High School at Washougal, Wash. Sam enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 2, 1953, and served during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge from the Army on Sept. 22, 1959. Chester William “Bill” Gardner Jr., 87, of Washougal, Wash., whose name was familiar in the logging enterprise throughout Baker County, died Aug. 22, 2005, at his home after an extended battle with cancer.
