Edward Carl Johnson, born April 18, 1880, in Minnesota, has significantly impacted agricultural education since joining the Kansas State Agricultural College in 1912. As dean of college extension, he expanded extension services, increasing county agents from one to seventeen by 1916. An accomplished author, he has contributed numerous technical works on agricultural diseases, demonstrating both practical knowledge and a commitment to educating farmers. His academic journey includes degrees from the University of Minnesota and a role as assistant plant pathologist in Washington, D.C. Johnson has also been active in various scientific organizations.

Balter, Alice Viola Beith – Obituary

Alice Viola Beith Balter, a pioneer of Wallowa County, passed away on September 6, 1932, at her daughter’s home. Born on September 7, 1856, in Batavia, Illinois, she moved with her family to Minnesota and later to Kansas. In 1883, she settled in Wallowa County with her husband, Julius Balter. A devoted mother and church member, she faced the challenges of pioneer life with resilience. She is survived by two daughters, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church, followed by interment at Prairie Creek cemetery.
