Elmer “Ellis” McCoy, 85, formerly of La Grande, died of natural causes March 1 in Klamath Falls. A memorial is planned for summer 2008 in La Grande. Elmer, also known as Ellis, was born in February 1923 in La Grande, the youngest son of Delmer and Mintie (Neal) McCoy. His parents operated a dairy on Mt. Glen Road. Ellis attended the Mt. Karl Roy Stone, a well-known La Grande businessman and longtime head of the Union County Planning Commission, died Saturday at Grande Ronde Hospital. He was 89. Mr. Stone, of 1703 Cedar St., was born on Sept. 15, 1895, in Sterling, Kan., to Robert and Amalia “Mollie” Birk. He served with the U.S. Army during World War I, and was corporal of the honor guards at the funeral of Buffalo Bill Cody at Pike’s Peak, Colo. On Sunday afternoon James Holcomb, one of Pine Valley’s oldest residents, was suddenly taken ill and died. James Holcomb, generally known as “Old Jimmy Holcomb,” was living in the valley over 20 years ago when some of the present inhabitants came here, and was then considered an old-timer. Elgin, Union County, Oregon Miss Pauline Becker died at her home here Saturday after a short illness. A resident of Elgin since 1891, Miss Becker was continually employed by the different telephone exchanges which have operated here since 1905. Wallowa, Wallowa County, Oregon Local people were grieved to learn through a telegram to Mrs. Mae McGregor, of the death last Wednesday morning, Dec. 5 of J.C. Rooney, merchant of Wallowa and who with his son Norval conducted a meat market and grocery in North Powder until early this fall. He died at Clarkston, Wash., after a protracted illness.
