Hon. George Ashby Cummings, ex-Mayor of Concord and formerly a member of the State Senate, was born in Acworth, June 13, 1833, son of Alvah and Polly (Grout) Cummings. His father was a native of Sullivan, and his mother was born in Acworth. He was educated in the public schools of South Acworth. At the age of twenty years he engaged in the marble business in Franklin, N.H., where he remained until 1861. He then moved to Concord, where he has prosperously carried on the same business. Biographical Sketch of Alanson L. Cooper

ALANSON L. COOPER, son of Barnabas, and grandson of Dea. John Cooper, was born Oct. 16, 1804. He possessed intellectual powers of the highest order. He studied medicine and graduated at Brunswick, Me., in 1827, after which he went to Europe, and during his absence spent several months attending hospital practice at Paris. He commenced practice at Auburn, N. Y., where he died in,] 841. As a poet, the few gems that have been preserved from his pen indicate a rare genius.

WILLARD P. GIBSON, son of William, born September 2, 1798, studied medicine and graduated at Castleton, Vt., in 1822;’ spent fifteen years in the practice of his profession at Newport and elsewhere, and then turned his attention to theology. JONAH STOW, from whom have descended the Stows, married Lydia Powers, and came early to this town from Stockbridge, Mass., with his four sons, Peter, Asaph, Solomon and Jonah, and long occupied ” Stow Hill,” now Brighton. His eldest daughter, JUDITH, married Whipple Haven, a brother of Rev. Jacob Haven; his second, LYDIA, married Hon. Cyrus Powers, a brother of Mrs. President Fillmore, and his third daughter, PRUDENCE, married Paul Jacobs, Esq., of Croydon.

The first known ancestor of the Dunbar family in America was Robert Dunbar, a Scotchman who, circumstances indicate, was one of the Scotch prisoners sent over to the Massachusetts Colony in 1652, by Cromwell after the battles of Dunbar and Worcester. John Tyler was well known in Claremont as an inventor and builder. He was a son of John Tyler and a grandson of Benjamin Tyler, both eminent mechanics. Benjamin, who settled in Claremont in the spring of 1776, built the first dam across the Sugar River at West Claremont, and was for many years one of the most public-spirited men in town. Henry Batchelder, a well-to-do farmer of Sunapee, was born here, January 17, 1843, son of Nathaniel and Sarah (Trask) Batchelder, both natives of Beverly, Mass. His grandfather, Zachariah Batchelder, a shoemaker by trade, was an early settler of Sunapee. Both Zachariah and his wife died in that town. Nathaniel, who came Sunapee for several years; and he voted the ticket alone. Active in religious work, he was an esteemed member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Newport. WILLIAM M. WHIPPLE, son of William, was born Aug. 9, 1817. His early life was passed at the homestead and devoted to agriculture. He subsequently engaged in mercantile business. He was Representative from Croydon in 1856. He removed to Sheffield, Bureau Co., Ill. in 1857, where he has been engaged in successful trade and farming operations. He is a man of fine intellect and agreeable manners, and has been the recipient of many public honors.

H. Patriot.
