Among the pioneers of Ontario and representative men of that beautiful colony, mention should be made of Leroy S. Dyar, who was born in Franklin County, Maine, in 1833. His father was Colonel Joseph Dyar, a well-known agriculturist of that county. His mother was Mary S. Gay. Both of his parents were natives of that State. Mr. Dyar was reared and schooled in his native place, closing his studies in the high school and academy. He was reared as a farmer. Kenneth ‘Ken’ Smith Formerly of La Grande 1943-2009 Ken Smith, 66, of Salem and formerly of La Grande, died Oct. 12. A private family ceremony will be held in Portland in November. Ken was born Aug. 27, 1943, to G. LaVerne and Dorothy Smith in Chicago. He married his wife, Connie, in 1966. They had two children, Julie and Marc, and moved to La Grande in 1981. Enterprise, Wallowa County, Oregon Joseph Belsher died January.1st, 1919, at the open air sanitarium at Salem, Oregon. He went there from Wallowa County on June 24, 1918, for relief from tuberculosis of the bone. The deceased was born July 16, 1898, in Elk Creek, Texas County, Missouri. He came to Wallowa County in November 1914, and lived with his brother Forest Belsher, on a homestead in Crow Creek Pass. He was laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Salem, Oregon.
