Thomas J. Medill, born in Milan, Illinois, in 1859, emerged as a notable figure in Rock Island through his political and business endeavors. Biographical Sketch of Alexander Waugh

Alexander Waugh, born in Indiana in 1826, was initially a farmer and navigator before moving to Rock Island, Illinois, in 1853. He journeyed to Oregon in 1864, facing a Sioux attack, and settled in Umatilla County with limited resources. Through diligence, he expanded his cattle operations and, by 1887, sold cattle for ten thousand dollars. Waugh reinvested this into land and improved his livestock. His financial success, totaling twenty-five thousand dollars, was complemented by his commitment to his family’s education and care for his orphaned grandchildren.

Biographical Sketch of Klaine, N.B.

N.B. Klaine, born February 5, 1839, in Bordentown, New Jersey, became editor and proprietor of the Dodge City Times in 1877, shortly after arriving in Dodge City. He served in the Civil War as a Second Lieutenant and later published the Warrensburg Standard in Missouri. His civic roles included City Clerk, State Legislator, and various positions in Dodge City and Ford County, Kansas. He also managed the Dodge City post office from 1883 and was married to Julia Kinkaid.
