History shows us that there are two distinct tribes which were attributed the name of Kawia by etymologists. The larger tribe is one of the Shoshonean stock, while the smaller, extinct tribe is a Yokuts tribe. Both of them resided in California, further confusing historians.

In 1869 Dr. Shugart was a resident of Belle Plain, Iowa, and at that time was desirous of establishing his residence in some portion of Southern California. John B. Crawford is one of the pioneers of California, dating his first arrival on the Pacific coast early in 1849. His first visit to Southern California was also in that year. Mr. Crawford was born in York Township, County of Peal, Canada, in 1826. His parents, James and Eliza (Beatty) Crawford, were natives of Ireland, who immigrated to Canada in 1810. Frederick Paul Young, 80, of Idyllwild, Calif., a former Baker County resident, died Feb. 2, 2008, at his home of complications from cancer. His memorial service will be at 1 p.m. March 8 in the Silver Pine Lodge at Idyllwild. Paul was born on June 2, 1927, at Butte, Mont., to Frederick Young and Laura Ackerman Young. He spent his childhood years at Sumpter where his great-grandfather served as the first postmaster in 1874. Baker City, Baker County, Oregon Bertha May Weeks White, 99, a former Baker City resident, died March 4, 2006. Her funeral, with full military honors, is scheduled at Riverside National Cemetery at Riverside County, Calif., in April. Mrs. White was born on Sept. 27, 1906, at Baker City. She and her daughter, Marjorie, moved to Los Angeles in 1930. In 1943, her patriotism and strong sense of duty and determination led her to join the Women’s Army Corps. He is in the real-estate and insurance business, and has one of the best established agencies in Riverside, representing some of the strongest insurance companies issuing policies on the Pacific Coast. Edwin Chidsey Seymour, Sheriff of San Bernardino County, was born in Otsego County, New York, in 1845. His father, also a native of the Empire State, was a cabinet-maker by trade, and moved to northern Pennsylvania when Edwin was a lad of seven years.
